D-One in Dinghy Sailing Magazine

You've heard the rumours.... even seen the boat on the stand at the Dinghy Show.

Dinghy Sailing Magazine though has gone one better and become the first publication to sail the boat. The occasion was the French Olympic Regatta at Hyeres, a location that delivered almost perfect conditions for a quick sail with sunshine and 10-12kts.

David Henshall, who was at Hyeres covering the regatta for Dinghy Sailing Magazine, came ashore after sailing the D-One with an 'ear to ear' grin. He found the boat well balanced and stable enough to give confidence to helms who have yet to sail a single handed dinghy with a spinnaker. Yet, when a few gusts came through, the boat delivered just the sort of controllable excitement that should help make this new boat a success.

David went on to say, "one of the interesting features of the D-One is the full width traveller. For a whole generation of sailors, who have grown up using strops or hoops, they've got a really pleasant surprise, as they find just how good a well sorted traveller is at controlling a big rig. This was really noticeable when reaching without the spinnaker, which is normally a weakness in the new breed of skiff style boats. I found the combination of using the traveller, plus the inherent feeling that the boat is always wanting to 'get up and go' made for fast -yet pleasureable sailing. I felt at home in the boat within the first 5 minutes. I want to sail this again....."

We know that David had jumped at the chance of sailing the boat, even though it was still a pre-production model. Once the final versions of the boat start rolling off the production line this summer, DSM will be there to conduct a detailed test sail. We might even let David have another go!!!

M24 Coming Events

Devoti Sailing is pleased to announce that we will be present at the Volvo Cup 2 in Argentario, Italian Champioship in Cagliari and Torbole Melges Week in Torbole.
The highlight of this M24 season is the Worlds, held in Porto Cervo, Sardinia. A service team, including a technician who can carry out small repairs on site, has been prepared for this race. For spare parts ordered by May 12th Devoti offers free delivery to the venue. Parts sold during the regatta will be subject to a 10 percent service/delivery charge to cover availability at the event.

Melges24 Class News

Dear Melges 24 Class Members
this is a formal notification that Melges 24 Class Rules C6.1.6 and C6.2.5 have been temporarily suspended.
These rules, which came into force on 1 Jan, relate to the new boom and mast track stops. Unfortunately the stops are not yet available from the builders and since the fitting of alternative stops could cause serious damage to rigs we have been forced to suspend this rule until the stops are available.
Please ensure that this notice is posted on your web sites and in any other relevant publications as a matter of urgency.

M24 IMPORTANT ADVICE FROM SOUTHERN SPARS

Subject: Sheave box issues on M24 masts - Jib Halyard Sheave Pin Check

We have recently become aware that some masts supplied since early 2006 may have jib sheave pins that are too short. The short pins have been fitted to very few masts, but can have serious consequences if the pin slides sideways inside the mast.
We recommend that anyone with a mast ID# 988 and higher check their mast. If you remove the sheave pin cover, the pin should be cut flush with the outside face of the mast. If your pin is anymore than 0.5mm short of this, then we want to replace the pin.
To prevent this potential problem in the future, all new masts are being supplied with the pin cover welded on one side so that the other side can protrude beyond the mastwall.
These new pins are available and simple to fit to existing masts.
If you believe that your sheave pin is short, then please send an e-mail to john.c@southernspars.com and we will immediately courier you a replacement pin.
Please include your preferred delivery address.
We will also be present during measurement at the 2007 World Championships to look at rigs.

Pins will be supplied with instructions for fitting.

The Melges24 is a reality in Italy that is attracting a lot of attention especially from the federation, the boats� owners, the professional sailors and the media: in the past years the class has been able to grow quantitatively and also qualitatively, gaining the best professional and non-professional sailors in the country and from abroad.
In order to meet the needs this fast growing market Devoti Sailing - already the official distributor for Malges24 in Europe � entrusts the exclusive distribution of Melges24 in Italy to Federico Michetti and to his newly grounded company, Freddys.

It would be difficult to identify in the Italian sailing scenery someone that knows better and loves more the Melges24 class than Federico. He was the pioneer of Melges24 in Italy: he has been World Champion together with Giorgio Zuccoli in 2000 - who indeed introduced this class into the Italian market-, twice European champion with Joe Fly in 2003 and in 2005 and at the top of the World Ranking List always with Joe Fly in the same years.

Federico faces this new entrepreneurial challenge with two new ambitious projects as an answer to the needs of the class.

We believe all crews are concentrating on the World Championship in Hyeres in August and are using the season�s races to prepare and test their boats. Luca Devoti appointed Skipper of +39 (Clan Dec) AC Challenge

On 25 March, Clan Des Team revealed themselves as the first official Challenger in the 32nd America's Cup after the Challenge of Record, Oracle BMW Racing. Since then the team have changed their name and are now to be known as +39.

Luca Devoti has been announced as skipper of the +39, and Iain Percy helmsman.

Devoti says that the America's Cup has been a long term ambition of his. "My Olympic career is long finished. I am 41 and a half. I could have moved to the Star, but I think that when someone goes to the Olympics who is over 40 there is something crazy. The Olympics is for young people and the Cup seems like a logical development. Also with my boat building and the creative part of my work, it is like completion, a dream come true really..."

Melges 24 Product Development Update by Paul Manning from Devoti Sailing

Devoti Sailing continually work closely with their major suppliers, and as with all projects the Melges 24 continues to be refined. A close involvement with New Zealand based company Southern Spars, and their One Design project manager John Clinton, has resulted in the launch of a number of improvements to the mast. For our first item in the IMCA e-newsletter, we thought this an excellent opportunity to inform our customers of this progress.

Simple checks on your rig can make you go fast by Paul Manning from Devoti Sailing

Following on from the developments that will shortly be introduced with the mast, I thought I would like to keep with the same mast theme and write an item on checking the alignment of your mast in relation to the mast foot, crane and spreaders. Before you put your mast up, it is always a good idea to check the symmetry of the three main components. Travelling distances by trailer can cause the mast foot casting and more commonly the spreader bar to move due to vibration. Any misalignment with these parts in relation to the mast crane and mast section can cause a significant bend or twist in the mast when you put it up, and with the correct gear this can be checked in 5 minutes.

Melges 24 care and maintenance by Paul Manning from Devoti Sailing

Looking after your boat quite often involves putting her in a barn at the end of the season, and unpacking her just before the first event of the next season, giving her a wash and polish and going sailing.

Unlike dinghies which have a ready access to fresh water sportsboats and keelboats can sit in a marina for 10 days without being cleaned, and it is generally the case that most people hear the club's bar calling them for a beer before any maintenance gets undertaken.

There are probably three main areas where long term damage can occur, that can be easily prevented with a few minutes of preparation at each event.

Melges 24 Spare Parts Situation

The new mast design with transparent painting on a natural structure of carbon fibres is now in stock. Another new development is the removable spreader tip.Spreaders are now additionally available in natural carbon black. Due to price increases by our suppliers we are about to increase the price by approximately 7% from September 1st. We always try to give our customers the best possible deal and as a result we are offering to maintain current prices for all deliveries to Torquay, if ordered and paid for by the end of August 2005 and in this case you will also benefit from lower delivery charges.
